Job description
Role overview
This opportunity is within a global energy trading business that has more than two decades of experience spanning power, gas, LNG, LPG, oil, and environmental products. With offices in London, Paris, Singapore, and Houston, the company supports clients and internal entities around the world through specialist risk management and asset optimisation.
The position sits on the Continental Europe Power Trading team, covering both the Spanish Power Desk and the Nordic Power Desk. It is intended for someone at the start of their trading career who will begin with a strong emphasis on execution and, over time, take on broader responsibility for complex trades and independent strategy development.
Key responsibilities
- Support proprietary trading across the Spanish and Nordic power desks in alignment with the business’s commercial goals.
- Carry out trading strategies developed with the team and gradually expand ownership of more complex transactions.
- Help shape trading and portfolio optimisation approaches and contribute to their ongoing refinement.
- Build, maintain, and improve tools that strengthen the desk’s day-to-day operating capability and project work.
- Partner with the wider commercial function to progress broader business objectives.
- Work alongside analysts to deepen understanding of optimisation models, especially those linked to hydro assets.
- Keep P&L checks, validations, and related control processes accurate and up to date.
- Follow Front Office Supervision Procedures at all times and complete the required annual attestation.
Skills and experience
The ideal candidate will have up to three years of experience in power markets and be comfortable operating in a fast-moving trading environment. A strong background in modelling, coding, and building tools is essential, with hands-on capability in Python, VBA, and SQL or MongoDB.
You should also bring solid knowledge of short-term power markets, an understanding of hydro asset optimisation, and familiarity with the trade lifecycle and risk control principles. Excellent analytical ability, close attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the confidence to work independently while collaborating across commercial and analytical teams are important for success in this role.
