Position Summary
The GIS Technician I is an entry-level role focused on the upkeep, analysis, and visualization of geographic data utilizing GIS software. Working under the direction of senior GIS personnel, this position supports mapping tasks, data handling, field data gathering, as-built construction documentation, and technical assistance for teams using spatial information.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Create, update, and maintain GIS data layers and spatial databases.
- Gather, verify, and update geographic data through field surveys, GPS devices, aerial photography, and other inputs.
- Support geospatial analysis tasks aiding planning, engineering, design, splicing, and construction teams.
- Ensure precise recordkeeping of GIS datasets and procedural documentation.
- Fulfill requests for mapping products, spatial datasets, and GIS services.
- Import, transform, and merge data from diverse sources and file formats.
- Adhere to GIS policies, standards, and best practices.
- Conduct additional job-related responsibilities as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Fundamental understanding of GIS concepts and map-making principles.
- Experience with GPS technology and techniques for spatial data acquisition.
- Knowledge about coordinate reference systems, map projections, and geodatabases.
- Proficiency in Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Gmail, Meet, Chat) and Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong attention to accuracy and excellent organizational capabilities.
- Competence in analyzing datasets and detecting inconsistencies.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively in team settings.
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with M4 Solutions, IQGeo, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online software.
- Exposure to SQL, FME, Katapult tools, and AutoCAD applications.
