About the School

The Hutchins School, founded in 1846, is an Anglican day and boarding school in Hobart, Tasmania, offering education from Pre-Kindergarten through Year 12. The school describes itself as a supportive learning community built on humility, kindness, courage and respect.

Role Overview

The school is looking for a dependable, practical Facilities Assistant to join its Facilities team in Sandy Bay, Tasmania. This position supports a safe, efficient and welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors by helping with maintenance, logistics, events and general operational tasks.

This is a permanent full-time opportunity with varied day-to-day work, suited to someone who enjoys hands-on tasks, solving problems and working collaboratively.

Key Duties

  • Carry out general repairs and support wider maintenance and operational needs across the school.
  • Help prepare and clear spaces for classrooms, examinations, assemblies, events and venue hire activities.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and assist with deciding what needs attention first.
  • Complete inspections, audits and reporting related to school infrastructure.
  • Assist with deliveries and the movement of equipment and materials around campus.
  • Keep tools, equipment and work areas safe, tidy and well maintained.
  • Operate school vehicles when needed.
  • Support a safe workplace by spotting, reporting and helping address hazards, following safe work practices, and complying with WHS legislation, school policies and procedures.

About You

To be effective in this role, you should bring hands-on experience in facilities, maintenance or another operational setting, along with the ability to carry out physical work safely. You will need solid knowledge of workplace health and safety, good organisation, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. The role also calls for strong communication skills, good interpersonal ability, and comfort working both independently and as part of a small team. A current Tasmanian driver’s licence is required, and you must be flexible to work outside standard business hours when operational needs arise.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

The following would be an advantage:

  • Current First Aid Certificate.
  • Accreditation to work safely at heights.
  • Light Rigid Vehicle Licence.
  • Trade qualifications or relevant TAFE qualifications.

Why Work Here

The Hutchins School says its culture is guided by humility, kindness, courage and respect. The school offers the chance to join a committed team and contribute to the daily life of a vibrant educational community.

Child Safety and Screening

The successful candidate must satisfy child safety requirements, including being eligible to obtain Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, completing a National Police Check, and showing a commitment to safeguarding children and young people through mandatory safeguarding training.

Application Requirements

Applicants need to submit a cover letter explaining their suitability for the role and a current resume. Applications close at 5.00pm on Sunday 28 June 2026. For further information, an email contact is provided in the source.

Acknowledgement

The school includes an acknowledgement of the Muwinina people of the South East Nation as the original custodians of the unceded kreewer lands on which the school stands, and states its commitment to healing through Voice, Treaty and Truth-Telling with Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
