Job description

The opportunity

Auckland Council is seeking an Event Facilitator to join its Event Facilitation team within the Events Unit. The role is primarily based in Manukau and supports community events across South and West Auckland, with occasional work across other parts of Tāmaki Makaurau.

This fixed-term position runs until 9 July 2027 and is being filled to cover parental leave. It suits someone who enjoys helping others succeed by guiding event organisers through council processes, offering practical support, and building strong working relationships to help events run safely, compliantly and successfully.

In this role, you will support community organisations, event planners, local boards and other stakeholders as they navigate Auckland Council requirements. Your work will contribute to safe, responsible and inclusive events that reflect the needs of local communities and help bring people together.

What you will do

  • Process and help facilitate event permit applications in line with Auckland Council requirements.
  • Support community groups, event organisers and stakeholders with advice throughout event planning.
  • Monitor permitted events and assist with compliance matters.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with local boards, community organisations and event-sector stakeholders.
  • Contribute to local event programmes and annual planning for event activity.
  • Identify ways to improve processes and support consistent event facilitation practices.
  • Assist with local events and community initiatives when needed.

About you

You are an energetic, collaborative and motivated professional who enjoys working with people and supporting positive outcomes. You can balance customer needs with regulatory expectations and handle multiple priorities in a busy environment.

Your background may come from events, project coordination, community engagement, hospitality, local government or a similar area. What matters most is that you bring strong organisation, good judgement and a genuine interest in supporting Auckland’s communities.

Skills and experience required

  • Experience coordinating events, projects, programmes or community initiatives in a complex setting.
  • Strong stakeholder management, relationship-building and customer service capability.
  • Confident communication skills for working with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Excellent planning and organisational ability, with strong attention to detail and the capacity to juggle competing priorities.
  • A full, clean New Zealand driver licence.

It would be an advantage if you also have

  • A qualification in event management, hospitality, communications, marketing, public relations, business or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in local government, community organisations or regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of event permitting, compliance or community-led events.
  • An understanding of te ao Māori and a willingness to continue building capability in te reo Māori and tikanga Māori.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements for event sites.

What we offer

Auckland Council offers a range of employee benefits and supports flexible working where possible. Benefits include access to EAP services, an Oranga Day, discounted Leisure Centre membership, and a range of partner discounts. The organisation values diversity and inclusion and welcomes people from all backgrounds.

Important information

This role is classified as safety sensitive, so pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required in line with Auckland Council policy.

The employer KiwiSaver contribution is additional to the base salary offered. Auckland Council is an equal opportunity employer and can provide support for access requirements during the recruitment process.
