Job description

Role overview

Auckland Council is looking for an experienced building industry professional to join its Building Inspection team in Manukau as a Building Surveyor / Inspector. In this position, you will manage part of a diverse inspection portfolio, carry out building inspections within your assigned area, and help ensure that building work meets the required legal and safety standards.

The role offers the chance to work across the region, receive structured training and ongoing support, and use your professional judgement to make appropriate inspection decisions. You will also work closely with builders, homeowners, architects, developers, and other development-sector stakeholders, giving clear guidance on compliant building practices.

Key duties

  • Carry out inspections of building work and assess whether it complies with building consents, the Building Code, BCA policies, and other legal requirements.
  • Make sound technical decisions on inspection results and next steps.
  • Support customer understanding of the Building Code and council processes by giving timely, accurate, and service-focused advice.
  • Record inspection outcomes carefully and maintain strong, reliable documentation.
  • Work with a range of stakeholders from the building and development community.

What you should bring

The council is seeking someone with previous experience in building-related roles and a solid grasp of building construction, structural integrity, the Building Code, and the Building Act. You should bring strong technical judgement, good communication skills, and a genuine customer-first mindset.

Important requirements include relevant qualifications such as the National Diploma in Building Control Surveying or an equivalent professional qualification accepted by IANZ, or a willingness to work toward the required qualification. You will also need at least 5 years of cumulative experience in a building-related environment.

Additional requirements

  • Working knowledge of the Building Act, Building Code, and technical or structural integrity aspects of construction standards or building design would be an advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deal effectively with many different stakeholders.
  • A strong customer service orientation, a practical problem-solving approach, and high ethical standards when carrying out inspections and enforcement work.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and handle conflict constructively.
  • A full, clean New Zealand driver licence is required, as travel to different inspection sites will be part of the job.

What’s on offer

  • Flexible working arrangements, including a hybrid setup.
  • The option to buy an additional week of leave.
  • Employer KiwiSaver contributions on top of base salary.
  • A supportive team environment with a focus on wellbeing and continuous improvement.
  • The opportunity to contribute to a city serving more than 1.7 million Aucklanders.
  • A workplace committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Salary and employment details

The pay range for this full-time role is NZ$90,000 to NZ$100,000 per year, depending on skills and experience. The role is based onsite in South Auckland / Manukau, with flexible working options available.
