Where you'll work

Job description

About the role

As a Customer Delivery Driver, you will represent Tesco on the road and be the person customers welcome at their door. The role is centered on more than driving alone: it combines safe delivery, helpful service, and friendly interaction with customers in their homes. Work is active, varied, and physical, with each shift bringing something different. You will operate independently for much of the day, while still having support from managers and colleagues at base whenever needed.

Availability window

The expected working pattern for this role is:

  • Sunday: 08:00 to 19:00
  • Thursday: 14:00 to 22:00
  • Friday: 08:00 to 18:00
  • Saturday: 09:00 to 19:00

Your contracted hours will be arranged within these availability windows, and you will receive three weeks' notice of your exact shifts. Tesco is open to reasonable flexibility if your available times are close to, but not exactly the same as, the advertised windows.

Pay and hours

The hourly rate starts at £14.18. For stores located inside the M25, the rate rises to £15.45 an hour. Depending on location, extra payments may also be available. New starters are normally offered at least 16 guaranteed hours per week, though there are also opportunities for people who want fewer hours, down to a minimum of 12 per week.

What the role involves

  • Complete the customer shopping journey by delivering orders accurately and on time.
  • Keep the van, trays, and work area clean, tidy, and organised.
  • Make sure trays are washed through the tray-wash process.
  • Load the van as required and check that it is roadworthy before driving.
  • Speak with customers about any order changes, including substitutions and short-code items, and offer refunds for items they are unhappy with.
  • Handle products and deliveries carefully, as if they were your own.
  • Tell customers that substitutions will not result in extra charges.
  • Deliver within the customer’s allocated time slot.
  • Contact the customer before arrival if you are ahead of schedule.
  • Contact the store or centre if you are running 30 minutes or more behind.
  • Help keep the back yard clean and clear by removing rubbish and picking up litter when noticed.

What you need

  • Strong team spirit and the ability to work well with colleagues to help the store perform at its best.
  • A warm, approachable manner with both customers and colleagues, including taking time to listen and say thank you.
  • The ability to adapt quickly to changing customer needs and embrace change.
  • Energy and drive to go beyond expectations while maintaining a good work-life balance.
  • Confidence in sharing improvement ideas with managers and teammates.
  • A valid UK, EU, or EEA driving licence, full or automatic only, held for at least 12 months.
  • No more than 3 penalty points on the driving licence.

Benefits

  • Holiday entitlement starting at 20 days plus one personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
  • Flexible working requests available from the first day.
  • Colleague Clubcard savings of 10%, or 15% on pay-day weekends, with potential annual savings of up to £2,000 and an extra card to share with family outside your home.
  • Free wellbeing support covering mind, body, and life.
  • Life cover worth five times your pay and a pension with matching contributions up to 7.5%.
  • A range of optional benefits, including discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work schemes.
  • Uniform provided.
  • Access to colleague networks that bring people together from different backgrounds.

About Tesco

Tesco’s aim is to become every customer’s favourite place to shop, whether they are at home or on the move. The company’s purpose is to serve customers, communities, and the planet a little better every day. Tesco also places strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a culture where everyone is welcome. Flexible working is encouraged and discussed throughout the application process, and Tesco supports inclusive recruitment through its Disability Confident Leader commitment.

Additional information

Applicants must have passed school-leaver age. Because this position involves driving, candidates must be over 18 years old if the role requires working before 6:15 am or after 9:45 pm, or if it includes work in areas such as the warehouse, beers, wines and spirits, counters, bakery, and driving roles. In periods of very high application volume, the role may close earlier than the stated end date so applications can be managed fairly. Individual feedback is only provided to candidates who attend an interview.

Accessibility and support

Tesco is committed to a fully inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Support for accessibility needs is available during recruitment, and candidates are encouraged to discuss any requirements as part of their application.
