Job description

About the organization

Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest university and one of the country’s biggest employers, with more than 6,000 academic and professional staff supporting over 46,000 students.

The opportunity

The University is looking for a caring and capable Clinical Case Manager to join Te Papa Manaaki | Campus Care within the Student and Scholarly Services division. The role focuses on early intervention, wellbeing, and personal support for students and staff who are worried about a student’s safety, wellbeing, or behaviour.

In this position, you will review student needs, create practical support plans, and arrange smooth handovers to the right specialist services, both inside and outside the University. You will work in a small, high-performing team dedicated to helping students remove barriers to success and guiding them through support pathways with empathy and professionalism.

Key duties

  • Review and coordinate referrals received from staff, students, and other members of the University community.
  • Assess risk and respond promptly and professionally to urgent or complicated situations.
  • Create, monitor, and update support plans for students with wellbeing concerns or more complex needs.
  • Work alongside academic teams, professional staff, and external services to coordinate support and care.
  • Keep clear and accurate case records and produce reports when needed.
  • Offer guidance to colleagues across the University on student wellbeing and response processes.
  • Help improve the service and strengthen referral pathways and processes.

About the team

Te Papa Manaaki | Campus Care sits within Student and Scholarly Services, which brings together services that support student wellbeing, academic success, and the overall student experience. Campus Care acts as a safe and knowledgeable point of contact for concerns relating to students, including wellbeing, safety, bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

The team partners closely with University Health and Counselling, Student Hubs, Accommodation Solutions, and Student Disability Services so students can be supported to thrive.

About you

The ideal applicant will bring empathy, good judgement, and a strong commitment to student wellbeing. You should be comfortable handling sensitive and complex situations and able to remain calm and professional under pressure. Please include any languages you speak on your CV or cover letter.

Required qualifications and experience

  • A tertiary qualification in social work, mental health, counselling, occupational therapy, or another related allied health field.
  • Professional registration under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, such as SWRB, NZAC, or an equivalent body.
  • At least five years of experience in case management or mental health support for young people or students.
  • Strong knowledge of wellbeing and support services in tertiary education or community settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Cultural competence and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Current legal right to work in New Zealand.

Preferred background

  • Previous experience in the tertiary education sector.
  • Familiarity with University-based and community support systems.
  • Fluency in Mandarin would be an advantage.

What the University offers

  • Flexible working arrangements, including work-from-home options and flexible hours.
  • Employer superannuation contribution of up to 6.75%.
  • Competitive pay with five weeks of annual leave.
  • Career development opportunities.
  • Discounted parking.
  • Generous parental leave support.
  • Childcare support.
  • Access to discounts on internal and external services.
