Role overview
This full-time onsite caregiver role is focused on delivering day-to-day support and routine personal care to assigned residents in line with each person’s care assessment and care plan, while following directions from supervisory staff.
Core duties
- Use the resident information system to verify details before helping with activities of daily living, meals, and related care.
- Promptly inform the Health and Wellness Director about any noticeable change in a resident’s condition.
- Document notes, SPA records, incident reports, and similar paperwork clearly and accurately.
- Escalate any accident or incident observed during the shift to the Executive Director and Health and Wellness Director without delay.
- Protect resident health information and report any suspected or confirmed privacy breach to the Executive Director.
- Report any known or suspected unauthorized access attempt involving the community’s information systems.
- Carry out only those care activities for which you have been trained.
- Prepare resident rooms before arrival, including making the bed and ensuring comfort.
- Welcome residents, guide them to their rooms, and help with introductions to roommates, residents, and staff as appropriate.
- Label and inventory personal belongings as directed, and store clothing properly.
- Support packing and moving personal items during room transfers or discharge.
- Help transport residents between rooms, to receiving areas, and to or from vehicles when needed.
- Help create a calm, warm, and respectful atmosphere throughout the unit and shift.
- Participate in regular team check-ins with nursing staff to identify issues and improve service delivery.
- Report resident complaints and grievances to the appropriate team members.
- Receive and follow nursing handover instructions at the start of duty.
- Follow infection-control and exposure procedures for blood and body fluids.
- Make beds, add extra covers when requested, and keep rooms organized.
- Check on residents who cannot call for assistance and answer call lights promptly.
- Monitor residents regularly to confirm personal care needs are being met.
- Support residents with meal setup, including describing food items and their placement for residents with visual limitations.
- Keep water pitchers clean, filled with fresh water each shift, and within easy reach.
- Provide post-meal care such as clearing trays and cleaning hands, face, and clothing.
- Carry out assigned duties according to facility procedures and supervisor instructions.
- Follow work schedules and assigned task lists consistently.
- Work cooperatively with other departments and facility personnel to meet resident needs.
- Notify the facility in advance if you will be late or absent.
- Report exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, or hazardous chemicals according to incident procedures.
- Assist with personal hygiene tasks such as mouth care, bathing, grooming, dressing, and undressing.
- Keep residents dry by changing clothing, gowns, and linens when wet or soiled.
- Help residents prepare for tests, therapy, dental appointments, x-rays, and lab work.
- Assist with lifting, turning, repositioning, and moving residents using beds, chairs, wheelchairs, bathtubs, and lifts.
- Support restorative and rehabilitative care as directed.
- Prepare residents for physical examinations.
- Observe skin condition, pressure areas, wounds, and tears, and report concerns promptly.
- Monitor disoriented or comatose residents and record/report observations as instructed.
- Carry out special treatments and support end-of-life care and post-mortem care as directed.
- Honor a resident’s refusal of treatment and report it to the supervisor.
- Use only equipment you have been trained to operate and report defects to the nurse supervisor or charge nurse.
- Assist with bowel and bladder care, continence care, intake and output tracking, and reporting bowel movement details.
- Provide eye and ear care support, including cleaning glasses and hearing aids and helping with hearing aid placement.
- Weigh and measure residents, and record temperature, pulse, and respiration readings as instructed.
- Maintain resident dignity, privacy, and safety at all times.
Qualifications
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities. Candidates should have at least a high school education or its equivalent. Strong reading, writing, comprehension, and reporting skills are needed, along with the ability to interpret instructions, procedures, and regulations in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Basic mathematical ability is expected for practical use of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. Proficiency with Microsoft Suite products is required. The role also calls for the ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds occasionally, sit/stand/walk for long periods, and use common office equipment. The work setting is generally low to moderate in noise level.
