Job description

Overview

Up and Under Ltd, part of the RSK Group, is an engineering consultancy that carries out inspections and surveys across bridges, buildings, and a wide range of other structures serving transport, utilities, and the built environment. The business is hiring Bridge Inspectors/Examiners to join its team based out of the Crewe, Cheshire head office. This is a permanent, full-time role.

The company works across the UK, so the role can involve a mix of home working and use of other RSK offices around the country, alongside site-based work. The balance between remote and site work depends on business needs.

Key Duties

  • Assess different types of structures, including assets of national strategic importance.
  • Take the lead on inspection teams when required.
  • Produce written reports, drawings, and defect schedules.
  • Handle complex one-off assignment work.
  • Work in line with established quality, health, and safety systems; the organisation operates to ISO standards.
  • Carry out a blend of hybrid and on-site work depending on commercial priorities.
  • Travel throughout the UK as needed; local assignments are preferred where possible, but overnight or away-from-home working may be necessary.
  • Work nights and weekends occasionally, with overtime rates payable for those shifts.

What You Need

  • Previous experience in bridge inspection or bridge maintenance, ideally in highways or rail; related structural inspection experience may also be considered if relevant.
  • A solid grasp of construction materials and structural forms.
  • Practical office IT ability, including Word, Excel, databases, CAD, web-based research, email, and file handling.
  • Strong organisation skills, self-direction, focus, and the ability to guide and motivate others.
  • Interest in engineering fundamentals and the ability to explain technical ideas clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality reports.
  • Awareness of common methods used to investigate construction materials.
  • A valid full UK driving licence.
  • Good physical fitness, as the work may involve rough ground, steps, steep embankments, ladders, scaffolding, and exposure to difficult weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HND in a relevant construction field.
  • NVQ in a relevant construction field.
  • EngTech status.
  • BICS Inspector certification.
  • STE03, STE04, STE05, or STE07.
  • Any suitable combination of the above qualifications.
  • Progress toward or achievement of Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS) inspector level or Network Rail STE levels.

Additional Information

Applicants selected for the role must pass drug and alcohol screening before starting and throughout employment. This requirement is applied strictly by the company and its clients.

Support, mentoring, and assessment guidance will be provided by in-house staff and assessors for those working toward the relevant certification schemes.

Salary and Benefits

  • Competitive pay.
  • Company pension.
  • Training and development.
  • Opportunities for overtime and bonuses.
