Overview
The Assistant HR Manager will support human resources operations in a lean, just-in-time manufacturing setting in Hammond, Indiana. This role is part of the HR team and focuses on day-to-day administration, employee support, recruitment, training, policy guidance, and maintaining accurate personnel records. The position also involves handling employee relations matters, supporting compliance, and helping develop and update job documentation.

Key Duties
- Explain HR policies, employee benefits, and company procedures to workers and candidates.
- Maintain employee records, including addresses, weekly pay details, absences, counseling notes, and termination dates and reasons.
- Review job applications to assess candidate qualifications and eligibility.
- Respond to questions about tests, eligibility, compensation, benefits, and related HR matters.
- Review personnel files to support inquiries and employee actions.
- Coach employees on conflict handling and performance-related concerns.
- Share information with approved external parties in line with confidentiality rules and HIPAA requirements.
- Carry out administrative tasks such as printing pay stubs, resetting passwords, resolving timekeeping discrepancies, and updating filing status through HR systems.
- Support employee questions about benefit programs, including life, health, dental, disability, retirement, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and employee assistance.
- Help ensure HR practices comply with legal and government reporting requirements.
- Recruit, interview, test, and select candidates for open roles.
- Prepare required paperwork and reports carefully and on time.
- Plan and conduct onboarding sessions for new hires.
- Recommend resolutions for employee relations issues.
- Review FMLA requests.
- Answer questions about company policies, procedures, and programs.
- Create or update job descriptions, and conduct desk audits when needed.
- Start and help investigate concerns related to harassment, discrimination, or inappropriate behavior.
- Protect the confidentiality of employee information and HR matters.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of office procedures, records management, form design, and clerical systems.
- Understanding of full-scope HR operations and how they support department goals.
- Familiarity with adult learning methods, including visual aids, interactive exercises, and practical application.
- Knowledge of training design, instructional methods, and evaluation of training effectiveness.
- Understanding of personnel management practices such as supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate options and recommend effective solutions.
- Ability to keep work records confidential.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with employees, managers, and others.
- Ability to read and interpret business documents, technical procedures, and government rules.
- Ability to write reports and routine business correspondence.
- Ability to present information clearly and respond to questions from managers, employees, and the public.
- Ability to plan long-term HR programs and adapt practices to personnel management needs.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and problem-solving capabilities.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field is preferred.
- Applicants should have 1 to 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment as an HR Generalist.
