Role overview
The Assistant Chief Steward helps lead the stewarding team to keep kitchen and banquet support areas clean, organized, and efficient. This position supports day-to-day back-of-house operations, assists with banquet plate setup, and ensures the right supplies, equipment, and cleaned items are in the right places when needed.
Key duties
- Supervise and support stewards so cleaning and sanitation work is completed efficiently.
- Check and record water temperature and chemical levels used for cleaning.
- Help with banquet plate-ups and support banquet and buffet service by moving stock and supplies where required.
- Assist cooks and kitchen staff with different tasks and provide any needed items.
- Return cleaned equipment and items to their proper storage locations.
- Operate and care for cleaning tools and equipment such as dishwashers, hand-wash stations, pot-scrubbing areas, and trash compactors.
Leadership and team support
- Help management with hiring, training, scheduling, performance reviews, counseling, discipline, motivation, and coaching of employees.
- Build positive working relationships and help the team work toward shared goals.
- Support quality standards and service expectations at all times.
Standards and safety
- Follow company policies, safety rules, and security procedures.
- Report accidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions to management.
- Complete required safety training and certifications.
- Maintain a clean and professional uniform and personal appearance.
- Protect confidential information and company assets.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with guests and colleagues.
- Welcome guests in line with company service standards and respond to their needs proactively.
Physical requirements
This role requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, and stooping. The ability to handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance is needed, along with comfort moving across uneven or slippery surfaces and working for extended periods.
Preferred qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Candidates should have at least 2 years of relevant work experience and a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience. No license or certification is required.
