Job description
Role overview
The Academic Counselor will guide undergraduate students in UCLA’s Center for Academic Advising in the College (CAAC) on degree requirements, academic pathways, and available options. CAAC operates within the Division of Undergraduate Education in the UCLA College and supports about 21,000 undergraduates through advising and related services.
Core duties
Along with one-on-one academic advising, this role contributes to program development, administration, and assessment for CAAC and College Academic Counseling. The counselor also helps with outreach efforts and reviews student petitions to make decisions.
Work expectations
The position requires a dependable, regular schedule with punctual attendance. The counselor reports to the CAAC Director of Advising Staff and Administration and may need to work evenings and weekends when required.
Compensation and benefits
UCLA offers a full salary range for this role. The final offer will depend on budget, relevant experience, technical skills, knowledge, education, certifications, licensure, and other business factors. Offers at the upper end of the range are uncommon. Benefits begin on day one, and total compensation can be reviewed using UC benefit and compensation tools.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have proven experience helping students with academic, professional, and personal concerns. Familiarity with university and college degree rules, policies, procedures, and student support resources is preferred. The role also calls for strong organizational ability, sound judgment, collaboration, clear communication, and comfort working with people from varied cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds. Applicants should be skilled in preparing accurate reports and correspondence, using common office software and online tools, handling confidential information carefully, and working with UCLA academic systems such as OASIS and Counselor Desktop.
Education and entry requirements
A bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, is required. Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
Special employment conditions
This position is subject to a satisfactory background investigation and requires completion of a Live Scan check before employment begins. The role is also a mandated reporting position under CANRA, and the employee must sign the required statement acknowledging the duty to report child abuse.
Schedule
Standard working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Union / policy coverage
This role is covered under SV-Stdt Svs & Adv Prof (SSAP).
