Working under the guidance of a Registered Nurse and alongside an interdisciplinary care team, this position supports direct and indirect patient care activities. Responsibilities

  • Deliver care in a way that respects each patient’s preferences, needs, values, and role in coordinated care.
  • Collect the specific care details requested by the Registered Nurse and/or licensed provider.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with patients, families, healthcare staff, and other employees to support better experiences and outcomes.
  • Interact appropriately with people of different ages, cultures, backgrounds, orientations, lifestyles, and physical abilities.
  • Work effectively within nursing and interdisciplinary teams with open communication and mutual respect.
  • Recognize personal limits, maintain self-awareness, and escalate concerns to the appropriate team members.
  • Support quality and safety by reducing risk through effective individual and team performance, including High Reliability Organization behaviors.
  • Use equipment correctly to help maintain safe and high-quality patient care.
  • Use information systems and technology to share information, reduce errors, and support decision-making.
  • Maintain competency in clinical applications relevant to assigned duties.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining clinical competence and accountability in practice.
  • Carry out rooming tasks such as identifying the patient, introducing the role to the patient and family, escorting the patient to the room, and preparing the patient for the visit using the standard workflow.
  • Perform rooming-related clinical tasks as needed, which may include vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, EKG, specimen collection, phlebotomy, INR testing, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care testing.
  • Handle clerical duties such as sending and receiving medical records and entering new patient records into EPIC.
  • Set up instruments and equipment according to department procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of an approved and accredited postsecondary program in medical assisting, nursing assistant training, or patient care associate training is required.
  • Prior clinical experience is preferred, especially 12 to 18 months of work as a Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, or Patient Care Associate in an outpatient setting or similar patient care environment.
  • Clinical competency is expected.
  • A current medical assisting credential recognized by the Connecticut Department of Public Health is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills are needed for interaction with patients, families, peers, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to adapt priorities and adjust work plans based on patient, unit, and team needs.
  • Professional, tactful, and effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication is required.
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform work requiring physical endurance and dexterity and consistently use proper body mechanics.
