Overview

This position supports the coordination of patient care activities in the Emergency Department. The main focus is entering physician instructions, helping close out related tasks, and sharing information clearly across different levels of the care team.

Responsibilities

  • Organize work in order of priority and respond to competing needs efficiently.
  • Support staff by locating and relaying important information, alerting the correct nurse or department to urgent orders, and helping coordinate communication during codes or other emergency events.
  • Understand the ordering flow and required sequence for lab work, radiology, operating room procedures, and checklist items such as consent forms; also act as a reference point for unit staff on these processes.
  • Enter physician orders accurately into the computer, Kardex, or manual requisition forms.
  • Arrange patient appointments for special tests with the appropriate departments and pass along all relevant details.
  • Keep medical records current by recording TPR sheets, documenting 24-hour intake and output when requested, maintaining charts, preparing intake/output sheets, and organizing discharge records.
  • Handle paperwork needed for transfers within the hospital and for discharge to other facilities; review pre-op charts for missing consents or test results and update the RN when information is incomplete; adjust charts for upcoming surgery or diagnostic testing.
  • Request supplies from Central Service or the stockroom as needed and enter the proper charges.
  • Keep an accurate count of the unit census and communicate updates clearly.
  • Assist with data gathering, quality assurance work, statistical tracking, and upkeep of logbooks related to unit activity.
  • Meet expectations for customer service, teamwork, efficient use of resources, and ongoing staff/self development.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned to keep the department or unit running smoothly.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or an equivalent credential is required.
  • Previous related experience is helpful.
  • Working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and medications is needed.
  • Strong computer skills are required.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.
