Role Purpose
The Marine Pilot plays a crucial role in safely navigating vessels within harbour waterways, overseeing berthing and unberthing operations. The pilot assesses navigational risks, ensures adherence to regulations, coordinates with crews and harbour personnel, and upholds safety to facilitate efficient and secure vessel movement inside harbour limits.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct vessels through port channels and aid in berthing by liaising with tugboats, applying local maritime expertise.
- Evaluate navigation risks for vessel operations, lead emergency preparedness and response to safeguard vessels and personnel.
- Inspect navigation areas and berthing facilities, detect hazards, and collaborate on dredging efforts to maintain safe harbour conditions.
- Communicate efficiently with captains, tug operators, and terminal teams to streamline vessel and cargo handling.
- Comply strictly with port rules and safety regulations, keep detailed pilotage logs and voyage documentation for review.
- Pursue continual skill enhancement in ship handling and emergency management; mentor junior pilots to build team capabilities.
- Advocate and enforce health and safety standards to create a hazard-free work environment.
- Embrace digital tools and AI solutions that improve operational competitiveness and business processes.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or diploma from a recognized maritime academy.
- Possession of a Master Mariner or Captain's license.
- Minimum of five years of sea service experience on varied vessel types and sizes.
