About the Role
The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) seeks a Driver's License Hearing Officer dedicated to upholding the standards and integrity of Iowa's driver licensing. This role involves providing specialized guidance relating to complex driver license and identification matters while supporting a mission focused on enhancing transportation services for Iowans.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for over 600 Customer Services Bureau staff and county collaborators, addressing advanced driver's license complexities.
- Conduct hearings regarding incapable drivers, discretionary reviews, informal appeals, and license recalls, resolving escalated customer service issues effectively.
- Interpret and communicate Iowa legal codes and administrative regulations to various stakeholders including legal professionals and law enforcement authorities to ensure compliance in licensing processes.
- Lead research and problem-solving efforts on intricate customer cases, enabling frontline teams to maintain high service standards and efficient workflows.
- Respond to court subpoenas by providing necessary documentation and legal explanations representing the Department of Transportation.
- Assist leadership with special projects and provide backup support across multiple customer service roles, demonstrating adaptability and team collaboration.
Working Conditions & Schedule
This is a remote position with a shift schedule from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional travel requirements and flexible hours.
Qualifications
- Five years of full-time experience in public administration including public management, oversight, strategic planning, or auditing; OR
- Combination of one year of full-time public administration experience plus four years of education and/or equivalent experience where 30 semester credit hours equal one year; OR
- Graduation from an accredited law school; OR
- Current continuous experience in Iowa's state executive branch equivalent to four years as a Driver & Identification Service Center Consultant or Administrative Assistant 2.
After hiring, candidates may be required to acquire a valid driver's license as determined by the appointing authority.
