Job Overview

This position supports the Community Affairs Department's daily functions through professional and technical assistance in planning reviews, zoning enforcement, permitting processes, and community development efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review planning application submissions and prepare comprehensive materials, reports, and documentation for public hearings, meetings, and board presentations.
  • Support presentations and detailed reports on development projects to entities such as the City Council, Planning Commissions, Variance and Zoning Board of Appeals, Downtown Development Authority, and the public.
  • Manage timely submission and posting of public notices and legal advertisements, ensuring completeness of Board Packages.
  • Maintain and update the City's zoning ordinance and zoning maps, ensuring public accessibility and collaborating with city officials to identify and address any shortcomings.
  • Assist in the implementation of the City's Comprehensive Plan and Livable Centers Initiative Plan.
  • Keep organized, accurate files and records related to planning and zoning matters as directed.
  • Evaluate zoning, land use, and planning proposals for compliance with municipal codes and regulatory standards, providing public information on development regulations.
  • Engage in preparing and managing state and federal grants, special studies, data collection, research, and submitting required documentation and reports.
  • Create presentations, marketing collateral, and external communications.
  • Assist with file management and compliance for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).
  • Compile socio-economic and demographic community data and produce pertinent reports.
  • Oversee and update the City's Geographic Information System (GIS) platform.
  • Conduct field evaluations and assessments as needed.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and assist in resolving citizen and customer inquiries.
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in urban planning or a closely related discipline is required, combined with at least two years of relevant experience or training involving urban planning, land use and zoning, land development plan examination, site plan review, and computer operations. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
