Role Overview

Australia frequently experiences intense weather events that are rising in both severity and frequency, increasing the challenges faced by communities nationwide. Within this context, the Hazard Preparedness and Response (HPR) team focuses on enhancing resilience in emergency management by collaborating with partners to improve disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.

Key Responsibilities

As a Hydrologist within the HPR Queensland team, reporting to the HPR Queensland Manager, you will serve as a primary liaison for emergency agencies mainly in Queensland, while providing backup support for NSW and the ACT. Your duties include producing Bureau products, offering specialized advice, and driving ongoing enhancements. You will integrate weather, climate, and hydrological data to assist decision-makers in understanding hazards, their timing, uncertainties, and potential effects. Collaboration with colleagues across the Bureau is essential to ensure that hazard information is communicated clearly, with relevance and embedded into services and messaging.

Professional Knowledge and Skills

The position requires robust expertise in hydrology complemented by meteorological, oceanographic, and climatological knowledge or a demonstrated capacity to acquire such interdisciplinary understanding. A proactive mindset towards learning about the impacts of climate, oceanic conditions, weather, and flooding on emergency management is expected.
