About the Role
Equity Bank Limited is a prominent financial institution across Africa, committed to enhancing the social and economic status of its customers through accessible and innovative financial services. With operations spanning multiple African countries and a customer base exceeding 12 million, the bank is recruiting a Data Privacy Officer to lead data protection initiatives.
Key Purpose
The successful candidate will bring expertise in international data protection laws to ensure ethical and compliant processing of personal data throughout the organization. A significant objective will be to establish a legal framework facilitating smooth data sharing across various business licenses and territories, promoting a unified customer onboarding process known as "One Customer View", while maintaining top-tier data privacy and security standards.
Main Responsibilities
- Formulate and oversee data protection strategy and governance structures.
- Manage compliance with relevant laws and assess data protection risks.
- Enable and regulate lawful data sharing across jurisdictions.
- Handle data privacy incidents and breaches effectively.
- Develop and deliver training programs to raise privacy awareness within the organization.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a bachelor's degree in law, Information Technology, or a related discipline; a master's degree is advantageous.
- Mandatory professional certification in data protection/privacy such as CIPP/E, CIPT, CIPM, or FIP.
- At least 8 to 10 years of senior-level experience within data protection roles, preferably in multi-jurisdictional financial services or technology sector.
- In-depth familiarity with global data protection regulations, particularly GDPR and African laws, and their enforcement.
- Proven track record in establishing and implementing comprehensive privacy frameworks at the enterprise level.
- Solid understanding of IT security controls alongside privacy-preserving technologies.
