Position Overview

The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) invites applications for an Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) role at the Sedgwick County Public Defender Office in Wichita, Kansas. This entry-level attorney position involves performing legal work under guidance from experienced attorneys and supervision by the Chief or Deputy Public Defender.

Mission

BIDS serves adults charged with felonies who cannot afford legal representation by offering dedicated, client-focused advocacy. The organization is dedicated to creating a collaborative, interdisciplinary defense system that not only focuses on individual cases but also addresses broader client needs through community resources.

Key Responsibilities

Assistant Public Defenders represent indigent adults charged with felony crimes in district court, developing trial skills and managing all areas of their caseload effectively.

Candidate Requirements

  • Graduate from an ABA-accredited law school and an active, in-good-standing attorney licensed in Kansas at the time of employment; applicants anticipating the 2025 Kansas Bar exam are also considered.
  • Maintain active law licensure in Kansas or, if licensed elsewhere, must seek admission to the Kansas Bar immediately after hiring.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, as courts and jails may not be within walking distance of the office.
  • Exemplary communication skills, both written and verbal, along with proficiency in using essential electronic tools including computers, e-filing, and case management software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with support personnel to deliver comprehensive, client-centered defense.
  • Strong organization and time management skills to avoid unnecessary case delays through thorough preparation.
  • Competence in managing complex litigation and emergencies with professionalism.
  • Capable of handling frequent interruptions, multiple inquiries, and crisis situations tactfully.
  • Maintain respectful, appropriate interactions with clients, coworkers, and all colleagues.
  • Genuine interest in criminal law and procedure and a dedication to continuous learning.
  • Consistently treat clients, witnesses, and colleagues with dignity and respect.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical professionalism.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to court and jail locations.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for Public Defender I starts from $62,500 to $65,625, varying by experience and qualifications. Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, vision coverage effective from day one, various tax-advantaged accounts, voluntary insurance options, paid leave including parental and military leave, paid holidays, access to fitness centers in some locations, employee discounts, and retirement and deferred compensation plans.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit a cover letter, résumé, writing sample, and a list of three professional references. Veterans claiming preference should also include a DD214 form.
