Job overview
This opening is for a Cashier in the Branch Banking department at branch level, working in a full-time capacity. The position is graded AM-II and reports to the Branch Operation Officer. There is no further reporting hierarchy mentioned.
Role objective
The purpose of this position is to manage cash-related branch activities in line with internal and external banking rules, ensure all relevant registers and online records are updated accurately, and complete the end-of-day system reconciliation.
Role scope
The role covers high-volume daily cash activity, compliance-related cash handling, branch audit support, and management of ATM/vault-related responsibilities.
Key responsibilities
You will support branch operations by processing cash transactions accurately and on time, while also maintaining customer account records. Core duties include receiving and processing cheques, drafts, dividend warrants, pay orders, and similar instruments, within approved limits, and issuing acknowledgements on the counterfoil. You will also disburse cash for withdrawal requests, accept cash for deposits, and collect loan repayments as per the EMI schedule while updating the system appropriately.
In addition, you will maintain inward and outward registers, petty cash records, and assets registers, and forward requisition forms to the Regional Head Office when needed. Each day, you will reconcile cash balances against transaction books and vouchers, then reflect the outcome in the branch end-of-day report. The role also involves jointly managing the branch vault with the operations officer, handling cash securely, and supporting smooth branch cash operations.
Customer interaction is an important part of the job. You will speak with customers at the time of deposits and disbursements, understand their needs, look for cross-sell opportunities, and keep them informed about new products and services. You will also guide customers on repayment dates, contact details for queries, and the use of alternate service channels for deposits, withdrawals, and enquiries.
Operationally, you will count and verify cash at the start and end of the day before vaulting, keep branch cash, keys, and other valuables secure along with the Assistant Branch Manager, and ensure cash department activities run smoothly. You must meet defined turnaround times, follow all applicable regulations and bank policies, verify customer identity during cash withdrawals, check deposit slip accuracy as required by audit, update passbooks for transactions, and prepare cash bundles for currency chest deposit with note slips.
From a learning and performance standpoint, you are expected to stay updated on the bank’s products, services, regulations, and KYC principles, complete operational certification programs, attend mandatory training, and complete goal-setting, mid-year review, and appraisal activities within the required timelines.
Requirements
The role asks for a graduate degree, preferably with a background in Finance or Commerce. The expected experience is 1 to 2 years in high-volume cash handling. Candidates should also have experience entering data in financial modules or ERP systems and consolidating accounting data. No certification is required for this role.
