Role overview
This full-time branch banking position is based at the Kozhikode branch in Kerala and sits at AM-II grade. The cashier reports to the Branch Operation Manager and is responsible for handling cash-related transactions, maintaining accurate records, and completing end-of-day system reconciliation in line with internal and external banking requirements.
Role scope
The position covers daily cash processing, CRL limit management, branch audit support, and control over ATM/vault-related operations. The role involves both financial and non-financial branch handling responsibilities.
Core responsibilities
The selected candidate will support smooth branch operations by processing cash transactions accurately and on time, maintaining account records, and ensuring proper cash movement and documentation. This includes receiving and processing cheques, drafts, dividend warrants, pay orders, and similar instruments within approved limits, as well as acknowledging them on the counterfoil where required.
The role also includes paying cash against withdrawal requests, accepting cash for deposit challans, collecting loan repayments as per EMI schedules, and updating all related entries in the system. The cashier must maintain inward and outward registers, petty cash records, and asset registers, and forward requisition forms to the Regional Head Office.
Daily cash balancing is a key duty, including matching physical cash against transaction books and vouchers and reflecting the result in the branch end-of-day report. The role also covers joint responsibility for cash custody and branch vault operations with the operations officer, along with safe handling of branch cash, keys, and other valuables with the Assistant Branch Manager.
Customer interaction is an important part of the job. The cashier will speak with customers during deposits and withdrawals, understand their needs, identify cross-sell opportunities, and share updates about new products and services. The role also requires explaining repayment dates and support numbers, answering queries politely, and guiding customers toward alternate service channels for deposits, withdrawals, and enquiries.
Operational tasks include counting and checking cash at the start and end of the day before vaulting, maintaining transaction turnaround time targets, ensuring compliance with banking policies and regulations, validating customer identity during withdrawals, checking deposit slip accuracy for audit purposes, updating passbooks where transactions occur, and preparing cash bundles for currency chest deposit with note slips.
Learning and performance expectations include staying updated on the bank’s products, services, KYC principles, and applicable regulations, completing certification programs arranged by the operations team, attending mandatory training as required, and completing goal-setting, mid-year review, and annual appraisal activities within timelines.
Education and experience
Applicants should hold a graduate degree, preferably with a background in Finance or Commerce. The role calls for 1 to 2 years of experience managing high-volume cash operations, along with exposure to financial modules or ERP systems and experience in consolidating accounting data.
