Software Engineer - Code Generation

About the Role

MongoDB is expanding its team to develop advanced tools that assist clients in migrating their applications from relational databases to MongoDB's flexible document model. The Relational Migrator team has been critical in facilitating this transition and is now evolving its solutions by integrating AI and traditional text processing techniques to enhance code refinement.

We are seeking a Software Engineer with strong software development expertise and a background in machine learning to join a product engineering team focused on leveraging AI for code conversion challenges. This role is based in North America and requires working in the PST or MST time zones.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with stakeholders to outline and execute a code modernization plan that ensures converted code reflects contemporary software standards while retaining original functionalities.
• Design and maintain a reliable code parser to accurately interpret legacy code formats, converting them into standardized structures such as abstract syntax trees (AST).
• Provide leadership in the engineering group by introducing innovative technologies, frameworks, and methodologies to address various challenges.
• Work closely with product managers and engineers to comprehend business needs and suggest new technical solutions.
• Maintain the quality of the codebase through comprehensive testing approaches including load, unit, and integration tests.
• Share expertise by leading knowledge-sharing sessions, technical talks, and promoting best engineering practices.
• Develop and enhance business and product metrics to optimize AI usage quality and cost efficiency.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years professional experience in software development, preferably with Java or similar languages.
• Experience with generative AI, especially large language models (LLMs), is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with text processing tools such as ANTLR is advantageous.
• Solid understanding of software engineering principles, system design, data engineering, or cloud architecture.
• Experience in compiler design, code parsing, or related technical areas.
• Knowledge of abstract syntax trees (AST), lexical and syntax analysis concepts.
• Curiosity and a continual learning mindset with a positive, proactive attitude.
• Engagement with current trends and research pertinent to product development.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Success Milestones

• Within 3 months: Acquaintance with MongoDB database, aggregation framework, problem domain, setup of development infrastructure, and initial peer collaboration including code reviews.
• Within 6 months: Delivery of major AI-enabled product features, contribution to multiple product releases, and participation in design and scope review processes.
• Within 12 months: Delivery of large-scale features across various technology stacks, involvement in recruitment and interviews, and collaboration with other MongoDB teams.

Compensation

The salaried range for this position in Canada falls between 108,000 and 149,000 CAD annually. Actual compensation depends on qualifications, experience, and location. This salary is part of a broader total rewards package that includes equity, flexible paid time off, and comprehensive benefits.
