Position Overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a full-time Railroad Flagger based in Chattanooga, TN. This critical role involves maintaining worker safety along train tracks by directing train movements adhering to federal safety regulations. The position supports a broad spectrum of clients including major railroads, regional lines, transit authorities, state projects, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing coordination of activities on the worksite to ensure smooth operations.
  • Maintaining clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
  • Leading safety briefings before work commencement to reinforce safe practices.
  • Strict adherence to railroad, state, and federal safety regulations and ensuring enforcement on-site.
  • Verifying that contractors comply with necessary training standards.
  • Identifying and addressing any safety or rule infractions promptly.
  • Preparing detailed daily reports capturing work activities and compliance.
  • Upholding on-track safety consistently in line with federal guidelines.

Candidate Requirements

  • At least two years of relevant experience in railroad environments such as Class 1 Railroad, Regional Short Line, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, Railroad Suppliers, Contractors, or Consultants; experience within the Maintenance Of Way (MOW) department is preferred.
  • Proficient with essential computer tools including Citrix, email, telephone, and messaging applications.
  • Comfortable using Android devices such as tablets and smartphones.
  • Extremely organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities.
  • Solid understanding of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Willingness to undertake extended travel assignments, sometimes lasting several months, with travel expected between 50% and 85% of the time.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required federal, client, and company training programs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent educational qualification is mandatory.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • The role is field-based, requiring work outdoors in varied and often challenging conditions.
  • Must be proficient in English for speaking, reading, and writing communications.
  • Physical requirements include standing for long durations, walking on uneven surfaces, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Work conditions involve exposure to extreme weather (hot/cold), as well as dusty and noisy environments.
  • Good vision acuity is necessary, including near, far, color, and peripheral sight.
  • Frequent travel or driving long distances is required.
