Railroad Flagger

Overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a full-time Railroad Flagger based in Valdosta, GA. This important role is responsible for ensuring the safety of workers on railroad tracks by managing train movements and adhering to federal safety regulations. The position involves supporting a variety of clients including major railroads, smaller rail lines, transit systems, state transportation projects, and contractors.

Responsibilities

• Organize and coordinate job site activities.
• Communicate effectively with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
• Conduct safety briefings prior to commencement of work.
• Adhere to and enforce all applicable railroad, state, and federal safety rules.
• Verify that contractors complete necessary training requirements.
• Identify and resolve any violations of safety regulations.
• Prepare detailed daily reports documenting work progress and safety compliance.
• Maintain strict on-track safety standards in line with federal mandates.

Requirements

• A minimum of two years' experience with Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, Railroad Suppliers, Railroad Contractors, or Railroad Consultants, preferably in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications such as Citrix, email, phone, and messaging apps.
• Comfortable using Android tablets and smartphones for communication and reporting.
• Strong organizational skills coupled with meticulous attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities.
• Knowledgeable regarding railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety procedures.
• Ability to cultivate and sustain solid relationships with clients.
• Willingness to undertake extensive travel, potentially for long durations spanning months.
• Capable of completing required training mandated by federal, client, and company guidelines.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work is primarily conducted in outdoor, field settings.
• Fluency in English with strong speaking, reading, and writing skills is necessary.
• Must be prepared for significant travel and long-distance driving.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and navigate uneven terrain is mandatory.
• Necessitates good near, far, color, and peripheral vision.
• Employment requires exposure to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
• Work involves dusty and noisy conditions.
• Physical capability to lift weights up to 50 pounds is required.
