About the Role
Merrick & Company is looking for an Intermediate Electrical Engineer specializing in laboratory and facility design to join their multidisciplinary Life Sciences group in Kanata. This position presents a unique opportunity to work on technically advanced projects for government, academic, and private sector clients. You will engage closely with architects and project teams to deliver coordinated solutions from initial planning to construction administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop electrical designs for laboratory and facility environments across diverse client sectors.
- Create and detail designs for power distribution (facility/site), emergency power, grounding, lightning protection, lighting, telecom, fire alarms/mass notification, security, access control, and other systems.
- Organize and produce supporting documents including technical calculations, specifications, and reports.
- Interpret and apply electrical codes and regulatory standards throughout design phases.
- Consult directly with clients to clarify and finalize scope.
- Contribute to engineering fee proposals and schedules.
- Collaborate with various technical disciplines to maintain design quality and compliance with timelines and budgets.
- Oversee workload priorities to ensure timely delivery.
- Occasionally travel as projects or clients require.
- Mentor and delegate tasks to more junior technical staff, supporting their integration and growth within the team.
Required Qualifications
- 4–8 years of in-depth experience in electrical systems design for buildings or laboratories.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) qualification in Electrical Engineering (or eligibility for licensing within two years).
- Experience (minimum 4 years) using design platforms such as Revit, AutoCAD, or similar for drawing creation.
- Proficiency with electrical analysis tools (e.g., AGi32, ElumTools, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, EasyPower).
- Advanced capability in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Strong grasp of applicable codes and standards (CEC, NBC, CAN/ULC-S534, IEEE).
- Canadian citizenship or permanent residency with eligibility for Reliability-level security clearance.
