Job Overview

Merrick & Company is looking for a seasoned Electrical Engineer to join their Life Sciences division in Kanata, Ontario. This role involves collaborating within a multidisciplinary Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) environment on sophisticated laboratory and facility projects for clients across government, academia, and the private sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design comprehensive electrical systems tailored for laboratory and facility projects serving government, universities, and private clients.
  • Create conceptual to detailed designs encompassing facility power distribution, site power systems, emergency power generation, grounding, lightning protection, lighting, telecommunications, fire alarm and mass notification, security, access control, and other specialized systems.
  • Compile detailed calculations, technical documentation, and specifications to support projects.
  • Interpret and apply relevant electrical codes and standards accurately.
  • Engage with clients to clarify and refine project objectives and scope.
  • Assist in preparing engineering fee proposals.
  • Collaborate closely with various engineering disciplines to ensure precise, high-quality outputs within timeline and budgetary limits.
  • Manage workload priorities efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Travel as necessary to support project and client requirements.
  • Draft, review, and revise technical specifications.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, delegate responsibilities effectively, and contribute positively to the team dynamic.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum eight years of experience in electrical engineering design for facilities.
  • At least four years of experience working with design software such as Revit, AutoCAD, or equivalents for producing engineering drawings.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) certification in Ontario or equivalent from another province.
  • Experience with electrical calculation software tools like AGi32, ElumTools, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or EasyPower is preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical codes and standards including the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), National Building Code (NBC), CAN/ULC-S534, and IEEE.
  • Eligibility criteria include Canadian citizenship or permanent residency with minimum Reliability clearance level clearance.

Desired Experience

  • Prior work with laboratory clients such as USDA, ARS, CDC, or similar organizations is highly advantageous.
