Overview
The Education Authority in Northern Ireland is seeking a full-time Building Supervisor to manage cleaning and maintenance services independently at a school located in Newry. This role involves safeguarding the premises, handling security systems, and maintaining mechanical services while adhering to established policies and standards.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain building security including opening/closing and ensuring all windows, doors, and gates are secured daily.
- Manage keys, monitor security cameras, and operate alarm and security systems, reporting issues promptly.
- Respond to after-hours incidents such as break-ins, ensuring the premises are secure and cleaned accordingly.
- Monitor suspicious activities during working hours and report breaches including illegal substance presence.
- Apply grit or rock salt during adverse weather to keep pathways safe.
- Operate heating and boiler systems efficiently, ensuring energy conservation and maintaining adequate fuel supplies.
- Manage lighting, routine plant maintenance, and monitor usage of utilities such as fuel, water, and electricity.
- Conduct inspections and report defects of firefighting equipment; maintain swimming/hydrotherapy pools chemically if applicable.
- Oversee cleaning operations of school premises (excluding school meals areas), plan and direct cleaning staff activities to meet quality standards.
- Coordinate cleaning schedules, update work procedures for improved efficiency, and ensure the proper use and maintenance of cleaning materials and equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness of grounds, drains, gullies, bins, and internal fixed glass surfaces, replenishing consumables throughout the day.
- Attend to porterage duties including receiving, transporting stores and materials, and preparing rooms for activities or examinations.
- Manage administrative tasks such as reporting, equipment record keeping, monitoring contractor activities, and maintaining staff attendance records.
- Perform handyperson duties within competence, including minor repairs and basic construction tasks.
- Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulations. Participate in ongoing training and induction of cleaning staff.
- Support duties related to school election use as required.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum of six months paid experience as an assistant building supervisor, building supervisor, caretaker, or cleaner in a formal setting.
- Willingness and ability to act as a key holder and respond to call-outs during unsocial hours.
- Knowledge of the responsibilities of a building supervisor operating without supervision, relevant health and safety legislation, manual handling, and use of security systems.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, administrative, planning, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work well within a team environment and demonstrate alignment with the school’s values and ethos.
Desired Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a NEBOSH Health and Safety qualification or an equivalent/higher level certification.
- Hands-on experience in maintenance and handyperson duties including minor repairs and construction.
- Proven experience using industrial cleaning equipment.
- Proven experience as a key holder including responsibility for premises opening, closing, and alarm setting.
Terms and Conditions
- The role requires compliance with the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, relevant legislation, COSHH regulations, and codes of practice.
- Training will be provided, including for duties at higher levels than currently held, with payment for these higher duties when required.
