Manager - Southern Wildlife Operations

About the Role

The Wildlife and Threatened Species Operations branch oversees a state-wide initiative to safeguard, conserve, and sustainably manage Queensland's protected wildlife. This is achieved through the development and review of policies and legislation, educational programs, community involvement, partnerships, compliance enforcement, and operational service delivery.

The Manager for Southern Wildlife Operations will lead and guide a geographically dispersed team, focusing on the sustainable management of protected wildlife using engagement and regulatory strategies. The incumbent will provide strategic and operational direction to the Southern Wildlife Operations team, offer expert advice to the Director of Southern Wildlife and Koala Operations, and ensure timely delivery of projects aligned with departmental priorities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and management to a geographically scattered team to advance sustainable protected wildlife management.
• Implement programs and achieve targets consistent with state wildlife management priorities.
• Identify emerging challenges within policy, legislation, and operations, contributing to strategic and tactical planning for the branch.
• Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of significant and innovative policy and operational initiatives.
• Offer strategic, high-level advice on policy, legislation, and operations through preparation of submissions, briefings, and correspondence often under tight deadlines.
• Engage and negotiate with stakeholders to facilitate policy and legislative outcomes, meet performance goals, and build partnerships.
• Maintain and grow effective strategic networks across departments and community groups, representing the branch in high-level committees and working groups.
• Promote a workplace culture that supports First Nations peoples and actively works towards improved outcomes for these communities.
• Ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment that prohibits bullying, discrimination, and harassment.
• Manage travel and flexible location working arrangements across the Southern Queensland regions, including occasional overnight stays.

Additional Information

The position is located within the Southern Queensland operational area with flexibility, requiring occasional travel. Applications are retained for 12 months. This role falls under the Occupational Group: Primary Industry & Environment.
