Medical Laboratory Assistant

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) at Shared Health, located in Beausejour, Manitoba, supports the laboratory operations by managing sample triage, accession, and processing of specimens. Performing routine basic procedures as per set protocols, including phlebotomy, the MLA ensures a safe working environment, compliance with quality assurance programs, and adheres to accreditation standards. Work is done under the supervision of the Charge Technologist or their delegate, in alignment with Shared Health's mission, policies, and provincial legislation.

Work Details

• Location: Beausejour site including Oakbank and Whitemouth.
• Work schedule includes day, evening, and weekend shifts.
• Daily working hours: 7.75 hours, totaling 2015 annual base hours.
• Employment status: Casual with full-time equivalency considerations.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent as per Manitoba standards is mandatory.
• Medical Laboratory Assistant program completion is preferred.
• Certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as an MLA is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

• Proficiency in Windows operating system required; familiarity with Microsoft Office is advantageous.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and sterile techniques preferred.
• Keyboarding speed of 50-55 words per minute considered an asset.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including fractions, percentages, and ratios.
• Effective oral and written communication skills in English are essential; bilingual fluency (French and English) may be required.
• Capacity to follow detailed written and verbal instructions accurately.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Maintains confidentiality with sensitive information.
• Ability to work well under pressure with attention to detail.
