Role Summary

The Zonal Safety Head will be responsible for driving safety management across the zone to prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and unsafe working conditions. The role requires close coordination with HO Safety and Project Safety teams to roll out management directives, perform audits, strengthen compliance, build capability, and continuously improve safety performance across all projects in the zone.

Key Responsibilities

• Deploy company safety policies, objectives, programs, and procedures across the zone and periodically evaluate how well they are working.
• Visit sites regularly and work with project stakeholders to strengthen and sustain the safety culture.
• Share regular feedback with the Operation Head and HO Safety Head on implementation gaps, improvements needed, and any major safety deviations or concerns.
• Intervene effectively with project teams and stakeholders when safety requirements conflict with project execution.
• Support contractor safety kick-off meetings so all vendors clearly understand the safety expectations that must be followed.
• Review monthly project safety data, identify gaps, and prepare statistical presentations for zonal management review.
• Ensure the Safety-First Portal is used effectively across projects and that GPL safety requirements are completed on time.
• Drive rapid audits and safety inspections according to the project safety monthly activity plan.
• Plan and conduct zonal safety council meetings with the Operation Head and all Project Managers as per SOP.
• Help investigate incidents, determine root causes, define corrective and preventive actions, and submit reports to OH and HO Safety as per procedure.
• Study audit findings, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are implemented so issues do not recur.
• Assist zonal HR with planning and recruitment for project safety resources.
• Contribute to pre-qualification assessments of contractors and consultants by reviewing safety performance.
• Support the zonal contracts team with safety requirements for contract packages based on the scope and nature of work.
• Provide safety inputs to zonal procurement for equipment and materials such as machinery, formwork, and scaffolding used at sites.
• Monitor site-level safety implementation through review systems and periodic audits.
• Compile and share best practices, and help roll successful learnings across the zone.
• Encourage sites to nominate and participate in relevant safety awards.
• Guide all zone sites on compliance with BOCW and other applicable OH&S laws and regulations.
• Coach site safety teams, including PMC and contractor safety professionals, to ensure strong execution of safety practices.
• Review zonal training needs and ensure training programs and safety campaigns are conducted at both zone and site levels.
• Track and support the professional development of the safety team.

Requirements

• Degree or diploma in engineering, preferably civil or mechanical, or a science graduate background.
• Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety of at least one year from a State Board of Technical Examination, recognized under State Factories Rules or BOCW Central Rules, or a Diploma in Construction Safety Management from NICMAR.
• ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certification preferred.
• At least 15 years of work experience, with overall experience expected in the 15–18 year range.
• Strong familiarity with safety and health legislation, standards, and codes of practice.
• Working knowledge of ISO 45001:2018.
• Experience in implementing or upgrading a safety management system.
• Practical experience in site safety inspections, audits, and gap analysis.
• Ability to develop and roll out safety standards, manuals, plans, guidelines, checklists, and training materials.
• Hands-on experience with hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA).
• Experience in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
