Role Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with guiding vehicles safely through or around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. The job includes placing and removing traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades, while using hand signals, paddles, and other devices to direct motorists. This position calls for strong attention to detail, comfort working outside in changing weather, and the ability to remain on your feet for long periods.
Key Duties
- Install and remove signs, cones, and related traffic control equipment to help redirect vehicles away from work areas.
- Control traffic movement using stop/slow paddles and other approved signaling methods.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios and other team communication tools.
- Stand, walk, and reach for periods that may extend up to 10 hours per day.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and handle items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control materials to and from job locations.
- Complete routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance inspections.
- Work in outdoor environments exposed to weather, vehicle movement, machinery, fumes, airborne particles, and moderate-to-loud noise.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Must clear a background review, including motor vehicle records screening.
- Must pass a drug screening and satisfy federal DOT requirements.
- Required safety gear includes work boots with safety toes, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Must be comfortable working in varied weather conditions and active traffic environments.
- Should communicate well with contractors and internal teams while providing strong customer service.
- Must work effectively as part of a team.
- Needs strong attendance, dependable transportation, and a solid work ethic.
- Must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Must be willing to travel statewide, including occasional overnight travel, and work nights and weekends as needed.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
