Job description

About Opendoor

Opendoor is dedicated to revolutionizing homeownership by providing a modern, flexible online experience that empowers individuals to buy and sell homes on their own terms. Our mission is to support wealth building, family stability, and community growth through homeownership.

Role Overview

This hybrid role involves working onsite four days per week and remotely one day weekly, based in Toronto, with relocation support for qualified candidates moving to Toronto or Miami. You will not be assigned to a team immediately; instead, placement will follow to maximize your impact and engagement.

At Opendoor, we adopt a high-trust, process-light culture without traditional project managers or scrum frameworks. You will be expected to see how your contributions connect to product goals and communicate effectively across teams through reviews, proposals, and demos.

Candidate Profile

We seek engineers who prioritize delivering value promptly, opting for practical solutions that balance perfection versus timely delivery. An ability to analyze first principles and form strong opinions about architecture and distributed systems based on experience is key.

We embrace language-agnosticism and welcome candidates whose strongest work may have been in unfamiliar technologies. Familiarity and daily usage of AI tools to enhance productivity is expected.

Strong communication is essential: you must write clear design documentation, provide constructive code reviews, diplomatically challenge ideas, and elucidate technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.

A passion for our mission and a positive mindset amid challenges are valued highly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop production-grade systems that support real customers and financial operations.
  • Manage features through their entire lifecycle, from design to deployment and maintenance.
  • Lead and contribute to technical design reviews.
  • Utilize AI tools extensively and innovate on their practical applications.
  • Conduct code reviews, mentor peers, and raise quality and standards.
  • Connect infrastructure concerns with product requirements effectively.

Qualifications

  • Proven software engineering experience with a history of delivering reliable production systems.
  • Strong grasp of fundamentals in at least one general-purpose programming language, with adaptability to learn others.
  • Experience with relational databases and the ability to optimize performance at scale.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to Miami, Toronto, or Seattle.

Interview Process

  • Initial phone screening with a recruiter (15 minutes).
  • A deep-dive technical interview (~60 minutes) focusing on a past project or problem.
  • Two technical pairing interviews (each 60 minutes).

The interviews are designed to assess collaboration and approach rather than speed under pressure. Candidates receive guidance beforehand about each stage.

Additional Information

If your experience doesn’t match perfectly but you demonstrate strong overall excellence or complementary expertise relevant to our mission, we encourage you to apply and explain your interests in your cover letter.
