About the Role
Narayan Builders Ltd in Mombasa, Kenya, is seeking a skilled Procurement Officer to oversee the sourcing of materials, managing supplier relationships, and controlling inventory for ongoing construction projects. This role demands practical involvement in understanding construction material needs, reading engineering requirements, and negotiating optimal pricing while maintaining quality and timeline standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage frequently with civil engineers and on-site teams to interpret project scopes and identify material demands.
- Plan and execute weekly procurement orders proactively to guarantee uninterrupted material supply on sites.
- Supervise inventory management at various construction sites and storage locations, including monitoring stock levels, consumption rates, and reorder triggers.
- Develop and sustain strong collaborations with hardware suppliers and manufacturing partners.
- Conduct price negotiations, finalize payment terms, and coordinate delivery schedules to secure the best purchasing value.
- Regularly visit construction sites to evaluate project progress and adjust material planning accordingly.
- Evaluate vendor quotations, identifying discrepancies or inflated costs.
- Maintain precise procurement documentation such as purchase orders and supplier records.
- Work jointly with site supervisors and store staff to coordinate delivery scheduling and material handling procedures.
- Explore and onboard new supplier options to enhance cost efficiency and minimize project delays.
Candidate Requirements
- Possess a minimum of 4 to 5 years' procurement experience specifically within the construction industry; general office procurement experience is inadequate.
- Have established networks with hardware suppliers and manufacturers, preferably in Mombasa or the coastal region of Kenya.
- Demonstrate proven negotiation expertise with a history of securing advantageous pricing agreements.
- Deep knowledge of construction materials including cement, steel, tiles, aggregates, timber, plumbing, and electrical supplies, as well as typical consumption and waste rates.
- Ability to interpret project designs and bills of quantities or collaborate closely with engineers to convert plans into precise material requirements.
- Strong numerical skills with the ability to critically assess quotations for fairness and accuracy.
- Proficient in IT tools with familiarity in inventory management software such as Zoho Inventory or Zoho Books preferred.
- Hold a valid driving license and willingness to travel frequently between sites; the company provides a vehicle.
- Highly organized, punctual, capable of proactive work management.
