Open Space Education Coordinator

Position Overview

This role involves organizing, supervising, and administering science education programs and volunteer activities within the Open Space Division of the Parks and Recreation Department. It includes contributing to the establishment of educational goals, policies, and priorities related to environmental education.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee science education programs and volunteer coordination within the Open Space Division.
• Collaborate in setting and executing educational objectives, policies, and priorities, including recommending improvements.
• Lead environmental education and citizen science efforts to foster awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of public open spaces.
• Create, promote, and implement age-appropriate curricula and hands-on activities aligned with community needs year-round.
• Support educational events and strive to involve underserved communities in Open Space Division initiatives.
• Incorporate STEAM and New Mexico Generations Science Standards in programs targeting students.
• Develop evaluation tools to measure and enhance program effectiveness.
• Recruit, train, manage, and assess volunteers involved in educational initiatives.
• Assist in designing interpretive signage and educational materials for Open Space properties.
• Contribute to budget development and administration for assigned areas.
• Maintain detailed records and report on programs, volunteer hours, youth served, and statistical data.
• Coordinate general administrative tasks for the division.

Additional Duties

• Carry out other related tasks as necessary.
• Stay informed about current trends and innovations in Parks and Open Space science education.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biology or education from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of three years of informal teaching or coordination experience in environmental education settings such as nature centers or science-based programs.
• At least one year of leadership or supervisory experience.
• Valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain one by hire date.
• Must obtain a City Operator's Permit within six months of hire.
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Combination of office and outdoor field environments.
• Responsibilities require physical stamina for sitting, walking, hiking, or standing for extended periods with potential sun exposure.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
