Network Design Engineer

About the Role

Join Google's Network Engineering team responsible for the global infrastructure supporting millions of Internet users worldwide. This role involves designing and planning the world's largest production network, contributing to capacity expansions, migrations, and integrating new technologies like Alphanet. The position emphasizes ensuring the network meets reliability and policy standards while optimizing cost-effectiveness and enhancing automation and tooling.

Key Responsibilities

• Design global network infrastructure that aligns with capacity needs and service-level objectives while balancing capital and operational costs.
• Integrate newly introduced product solutions into network plans, ensuring readiness of tools and business processes.
• Continuously refine business processes across their lifecycle, including data collection, validation, and publication.
• Establish and uphold network planning and design policies focusing on architecture, hardware lifecycle, and capacity targets to enhance reliability and reduce risks.
• Develop and advocate automation tools and scripts to streamline network planning and reduce task cycle times while improving quality.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least three years of expertise in network routing protocols, design, troubleshooting, and working with network equipment providers.
• Minimum of three years' experience in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), TCP/IP, or network systems design and operations.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Go, or Python.
• Experience with scripting (Go, Python) and writing SQL scripts.
• Knowledge of Content Distribution Networks (CDN), IP transit/peering, dark fiber, colocation, optical transport, and cloud technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing complex networks involving multiple sites and products.
• Carrier-class telecommunications experience including DWDM optical and IP networks, network automation with Go/Python and SQL scripting.
• Background in large-scale capacity augmentation or migration projects within telecommunications, hyperscale, data center, or colocation environments.
• Expertise in defining system or process requirements for layer 1/2/3 network systems design and integration.
• Skills in forecasting, planning, and utilizing design tools and workflow automation tools to enhance network planning effectiveness.

Compensation

Salary range in Ireland: €100000 to €103000 annually, supplemented with a 15% bonus target, equity options, and additional benefits.
