Role overview
UniVirtual creates interactive learning products for immersive 3D environments, using Unity and its own virtual learning platform to transform courses, labs, and training into gamified experiences. The company serves higher education, corporate learning, and First Nations communities across the US and Canada.
This opportunity is for a Learning Experience Designer who can convert educational and training material into engaging, practical, and build-ready interactions for a virtual 3D platform. The work blends instructional design, UX thinking, and game or interactive design.
The team is fully remote and currently has 18 people. The role is intended for someone at an associate level who wants to grow into a specialised interactive learning design position.
Contract and location
This is a fully remote position, but applicants must be based in the time zone range from UTC-5 to UTC+3.
The initial contract runs for 6 months, with a real possibility of continuing longer.
Work is collaborative during shared hours from 12:00 to 17:00 UTC; outside of that window, scheduling is flexible and focused on output rather than online presence.
What you will do
- Work with the product lead and subject-matter experts to shape learning experiences and record the reasoning behind design choices.
- Convert course or training content into interactive learning structures such as learner journeys, interaction steps, UI sketches, NPC dialogue, visual references, storyboards, and developer-facing specifications.
- Evaluate built features and assets against the intended design and provide structured, actionable feedback.
- Refine designs based on QA findings and playtest results while keeping design documents current.
- Contribute to stronger templates, documentation practices, and internal design workflows.
- Collaborate with developers, artists, QA, subject-matter experts, and leadership across functions.
Candidate profile
UniVirtual is open to applicants from either of two backgrounds: an instructional or learning designer who wants to work more deeply with games and interaction, or a game/serious-games/interactive designer who wants to work in education.
The role starts by working closely with the CEO, who leads product and experience design, and by learning the company’s established methodology for immersive learning. Over time, ownership increases from small activities to module sections and eventually complete learning experiences.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in a design-focused role, such as learning experience design, instructional design, UX, product design, game design, serious games, or educational technology.
- Hands-on experience creating digital experiences for learners or users, with attention to clear flow, guidance, feedback, and usability.
- Proven ability to design work that is then built by others, while working with developers, artists, QA teams, educators, or subject experts.
- Comfort working from incomplete or high-level source material by researching the topic, identifying missing information, and turning it into structured design output.
- Ability to make progress independently when direction is broad or not fully specified.
- Strong spoken and written English, including the ability to produce detailed documentation and explain complex ideas clearly.
- Must be located within the UTC-5 to UTC+3 time zone range.
- Preferred background includes experience combining instructional design with game, UX, or interactive design.
- Unity-based product experience is an advantage.
- Experience in edtech, higher education, or STEM learning/training is desirable.
- Experience iterating on live products after release is a plus.
Perks and benefits
- Work that has a clear educational and community impact, including support for universities, professional development, and First Nations communities.
- Flexible working style with shared collaboration hours and freedom to manage your own schedule beyond them.
- 33 days of paid time off each year, covering holidays and sick leave, even on a contract basis.
- A supportive team culture that values collaboration over competition.
- Mentorship and real scope to grow into broader ownership of interactive learning and product design.
- Annual compensation of USD 30,000 to USD 40,000, depending on experience, skills, and location.
Additional information
The role is part of a small, growing remote team that values work with purpose and cross-functional collaboration.
UniVirtual’s design approach is based on more than 13 years of experience developing immersive learning methods.
The company works primarily with higher education, but also supports corporate training and First Nations communities in the US and Canada.
This position is intended to evolve over time, beginning with close guidance and moving toward greater independence and ownership.
