Job description
Overview
The City of Ottawa's Infrastructure & Water Services Department is seeking two permanent full-time Leak Detectors to join the Water Linear & Customer Services unit. This team manages programs related to municipal water and wastewater infrastructure including grant programs, rehabilitation, lead pipe replacement, backflow prevention monitoring, field locates, and leak detection services.
Key Responsibilities
You will be tasked with performing leak detection activities comprising emergency and non-emergency responses, conducting leak surveys, and pinpointing the exact locations of leaks within water distribution systems.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of Grade 12 education.
- At least 4 years experience in water distribution or closely related field.
- Experience or formal training in leak detection services and/or water system locates considered an asset.
Certifications and Training
- Mandatory completion of all employer-required job training and certifications such as WHMIS, fall arrest, and confined space entry within designated timeframes.
- Possession and maintenance of Ontario MOE Class 1 Drinking Water Distribution Operator Certificate or Ontario MOE Class 1 Water Treatment Operator Certificate required.
Knowledge and Competencies
- Understanding of water distribution infrastructure and operations.
- Familiarity with relevant city policies, procedures, and standards.
- Awareness of applicable health and safety legislation and worker rights and responsibilities.
- Ability to read and interpret maps and plans.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Proficiency with computers and software such as geoOttawa, ArcGIS, Maximo, Microsoft Word, and Outlook.
- Mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, reliability, initiative, conscientiousness, observance, and confidence.
- Willingness to work on-call shifts and overtime as required.
Additional Details
- Work hours: 40 hours per week.
- Location: 951 Clyde Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario.
- Salary range for 2024: $67,604 to $79,096 annually.
- Employment governed under CUPE 503 collective agreement with possible initial pay at 95% of starting salary.
- Language: Proficiency in English (oral, reading, writing) is required.
- A criminal records and judicial matters check (Level 2) must be completed to employer satisfaction.
