Laboratory Assistant

About the Role

Based at ALS Environmental in Burlington, Ontario, the Laboratory Assistant role supports routine laboratory operations by preparing samples for analysis and maintaining laboratory functions. The position reports directly to the Organic Prep Supervisor and involves both independent and collaborative work, ensuring top-quality and efficient service to internal clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Timely processing of samples adhering to client turnaround times and holding protocols
• Preparation of samples involving tasks such as screening, homogenization, and subsampling
• Preparing reagents and chromatographic columns for analyses
• Archiving and disposing of samples properly
• Maintaining cleanliness and organization in the workspace, including glassware, waste management, and sample distribution
• Accurate record-keeping and documentation according to laboratory standards
• Preparation and assembly of glassware, bottles, and lab materials
• Operating basic laboratory and preparation equipment
• General cleaning, archival duties, and equipment washing as needed
• Supporting training activities as required
• Participating in review and suggestions for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Strict adherence to SOPs and quality assurance/quality control requirements
• Following established analytical methods and schedules to uphold quality standards
• Complying with health and safety policies and regulations
• Performing other assigned duties

Requirements and Qualifications

• Proficient English communication skills across listening, speaking, writing, and reading
• Basic competency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and fundamental computer skills
• Accurate and efficient data entry capabilities
• Capability to handle repetitive tasks precisely in a high-paced environment
• Excellent organizational skills with ability to meet strict deadlines
• Strong attention to detail and a solid work ethic, with flexibility to undertake diverse responsibilities
• Clear communication skills suited for understanding and following detailed instructions
• Completion of high school education or equivalent; a degree or technical diploma in chemistry or related scientific field is considered beneficial

Physical and Work Conditions

• Manual dexterity necessary for performing precise and repetitive laboratory tasks
• Ability to stand for up to 8 hours per day
• Frequent lifting of items up to 30 pounds and carrying them short distances
• Potential exposure to unpleasant odors
• Requirement to be clean-shaven to safely use solvent respirators
• Shift work including day, afternoon, and overnight (graveyard) shifts, with weekend availability as ALS operates 24/7

Compensation and Benefits

• Estimated hourly wage approximately 21 Canadian Dollars, subject to individual factors like skills, experience, and education
