Investigative Journalist

Overview

We are seeking a contract journalist to work remotely from Australia. The role calls for a weekly commitment of around 10 to 40 hours and focuses on producing original reporting with strong editorial standards.

What you will do

• Investigate story ideas, craft pitches, and turn them into original news pieces, features, and long-form articles.
• Carry out interviews, collect direct insights, and confirm information through reliable and authoritative references.
• Write polished, accurate, and audience-focused content that is easy to understand and engaging to read.
• Review and refine articles for readability, consistency, and compliance with editorial guidelines.
• Work alongside editors, designers, and fellow journalists to strengthen the final output.
• Keep track of breaking developments, trends, and topic-specific news relevant to the assigned coverage area.

Requirements

• You should already have journalism experience and a portfolio that demonstrates published work.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills are essential, along with careful attention to detail.
• You need to be comfortable interviewing sources and distilling complex information into clear narratives.
• Success in this role requires the ability to work autonomously and handle fast-moving deadlines in a remote environment.
• A curious mindset, strong initiative, and solid critical-thinking ability are important.
• You should understand media law, journalistic ethics, and accepted reporting practices.
