Role Overview

The Editor, Subscriber Content, serves as a key contributor to Newsweek’s subscriber-first editorial team. This role focuses on rapidly producing insightful and distinctive commentary that deepens subscription value by analyzing major political, global, cultural, and breaking news stories. Guided by the Senior Editor, the Editor crafts compelling analysis that helps subscribers understand the significance, evolving context, and stakes of prominent news events.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce timely, high-quality subscriber-focused commentary that extends beyond event recaps by providing analysis and interpretation.
• Spot subscriber-relevant angles on national and international news and develop them into clear, authoritative opinion pieces aligned with Newsweek’s standards.
• Deliver clean, concise copy promptly under deadline pressures including initial drafts and revisions, emphasizing accuracy, clarity, fairness, and coherent structure.
• Follow editorial guidance from senior staff, accepting feedback and implementing revisions to elements such as introductions, headlines, framing, and emphasis.
• Explain to subscribers why a story matters by outlining its background, implications, and future developments.
• Assist in story packaging within the CMS including refining headlines, subheads, captions, metadata, and internal linking to ensure timely publication readiness.
• Collaborate with editors to ensure the visual and editorial completeness of stories, by selecting suitable images or embeds where appropriate.
• Support the subscriber newsletter process by suggesting content, drafting summaries, and preparing copy under senior editor direction.
• Occasionally contribute to alternative formats including short videos, talking points, or editorial support for promotional content.
• Monitor current news developments and proactively pitch subscriber commentary opportunities to senior editors.
• Apply thorough media law awareness and editorial standards, recognizing issues such as defamation, privacy, restrictions, copyrights, and fair use, escalating when necessary.
• Use AI tools judiciously, ensuring output verification, proper disclosure, and maintaining strong human editorial oversight.
• Work collaboratively across editorial, newsletters, video, and audience teams to sustain an organized workflow for subscriber content.
• Carry out other reasonable tasks required to advance business needs.

Candidate Profile

• Deep understanding of US and international news with an ability to identify developments impactful to subscribing audiences.
• Proven track record of writing rapidly and accurately in a digital newsroom environment, including under the pressures of breaking news and tight deadlines.
• Skilled in producing interpretive commentary that provides readers with meaningful insights beyond mere reporting.
• Strong sourcing skills combined with commitment to accuracy, fairness, and transparency, knowing when to add context, balance, or external voices.
• Familiarity with CMS systems and attention to editorial metadata, links, visuals, and overall content presentation for publication quality.
• Experience or strong interest in subscriber-based journalism products, newsletters, and engagement-driven content formats.
• Exposure to multi-format journalism such as video, audio, or social media is beneficial though not mandatory.
• Practical knowledge of media law and editorial risk management with confidence to seek guidance and raise issues appropriately.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, maintaining professionalism and composure under pressure.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time position with standard working hours from 8am to 5pm UK time, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend shifts. The role offers flexibility to work remotely anywhere within the UK or from the office located at Canary Wharf, London.
