Role Overview
Old Mutual South Africa is committed to unlocking Africa's potential through diverse and talented individuals. We are seeking a dedicated Data Engineer to design, develop, and maintain data integration pipelines within our actuarial data ecosystem, including Delta Bricks, the Data Lake, and layered data tables (Bronze, Silver, Gold). This role focuses on writing and maintaining robust Python scripts and other technical code for data ingestion and transformation while ensuring high data quality and system reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and sustain comprehensive data ingestion pipelines leveraging Python and associated technologies to funnel data from multiple sources into Delta Bricks and the Data Lake.
- Construct and manage ETL/ELT workflows that curate data through Bronze, Silver, and Gold stages, maintaining consistent standards of data accuracy and reliability.
- Apply thorough validation, cleaning, and reconciliation protocols to enforce data integrity across all processing layers.
- Collaborate closely with the Actuarial department to establish data quality benchmarks and enforce data governance throughout the pipeline.
- Create, update, and review Python scripts (and other relevant programming code) critical for extracting, transforming, and loading data.
- Utilize version control systems and implement CI/CD methodologies for efficient development and deployment of data engineering codebases.
- Constantly monitor pipeline performance to detect bottlenecks, optimize throughput, ensure scalability, and enhance fault tolerance.
- Plan capacity and perform performance tuning improvements proactively.
- Engage with Actuarial Analysts, Data Scientists, and other business partners to grasp data requirements and design solutions enabling actuarial computations, product pricing, financial reporting, and risk management.
- Coordinate with platform teams to align with corporate data architecture, security frameworks, and compliance mandates.
- Document comprehensively all data flows, models, processes, and system settings.
- Provide guidance, training, and share best practices with team members and relevant stakeholders.
- Address production incidents and data anomalies promptly and effectively.
- Continuously improve the data engineering environment to ensure superior data quality for actuarial applications.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in data engineering, data integration, or similar capacities.
- Demonstrated expertise in constructing, optimizing, and managing data pipelines and architectures, particularly ETL/ELT processes within Data Lake environments.
Technical Skills
- Advanced Python programming skills for data processing, automation, and scripting.
- Hands-on experience with data lake platforms and data lifecycle stages (Bronze, Silver, Gold or equivalent).
- Strong command of SQL for querying and transforming extensive databases.
- Familiarity with version control tools such as Git and use of CI/CD pipelines.
- Knowledge of cloud data infrastructures, containerization technologies, or orchestration tools like Azure, AWS, Kubernetes, Airflow is beneficial.
