About the Role and Organization

NHS Highland is seeking to appoint two Clinical Development Fellows specializing in General Medicine and Surgery at Lorn & Islands Hospital, situated in Oban, one of the rural general hospitals under NHS Highland. Oban offers an excellent place to live and work, surrounded by natural beauty near the Highlands and islands, approximately two hours' drive from Glasgow.

The contracts are fixed term, with opportunities lasting either 6 months (05/08/2026 to 02/02/2027) or 12 months (05/08/2026 to 03/08/2027). The posts provide a salary band from £47,438 to £62,758 per annum pro rata, including a 40% pay banding supplement for out-of-hours work contributions.

Responsibilities

Successful applicants will manage both medical and surgical patients, working collaboratively with consultant physicians, surgeons, anaesthetists, radiologists, and rural emergency practitioners. Significant clinical duties include work in the Emergency Department under close supervision, handling acute and emergency cases alongside inpatient management. Opportunities exist to perform more clinical procedures than in larger units.

The role also includes 4 hours of protected development time per week, which can be tailored to individual interests such as teaching Dundee University medical students, organizing their curriculum, engaging in quality improvement projects, or spending time in theatre, anaesthetics, outpatients, or radiology. Support for study leave related to relevant projects or meetings is potentially available.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must have completed UK Foundation Year 2 training by 4 August 2026, hold full General Medical Council (GMC) registration with a current license to practice at the time of appointment, and have interest or experience in general medicine, surgery, or rural medicine. These posts are ideal for those preparing to enter Core Training 1 (CT1) or Internal Medicine Training 1 (IMT1), or candidates seeking additional clinical experience while studying for MRCP or MRCS qualifications.

Additional Information

  • Applicants should submit their applications via the official Jobtrain system.
  • CV uploads are not accepted for shortlisting.
  • Application deadline is midnight Sunday 26th July 2026.
  • Accommodation of applicants' interests will be balanced with service needs.
  • Opportunities exist for Gaelic-speaking applicants.
  • Communication will be primarily via email; candidates are advised to check their emails regularly, including junk folders.
  • Technical support and guidance for the application process are available.
