Job Summary and Responsibilities
This position requires professional expertise in multiple scientific disciplines including chemistry, toxicology, hydrology, entomology, limnology, parasitology, and ecology. The role involves applying field and laboratory methodologies to collect and analyze samples, coupled with statistical techniques to interpret study results effectively. Strong written communication skills are essential for preparing correspondence, scientific and administrative reports, and management plans. Maintaining organized and accurate data records is a key responsibility. The incumbent will also establish and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues, federal agencies, tribal and local entities, conservation groups, and community members, employing tact and diplomacy. When hired below the full performance level, duties will be developmental in nature.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Proof of U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
- Appointment subject to satisfactory background check.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must register for Selective Service.
- Participation in direct deposit is required.
- Must successfully pass E-Verify employment verification.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
- Completion of mandated training and holding a government charge card with travel or purchase authority may be necessary.
- A probationary period applies, assessing job performance, conduct, agency needs, and continued public interest alignment; failure to receive certification at probation end will result in termination.
Education and Experience
- Applicants must hold a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry, or a related discipline accompanied by transcripts; or
- A combination of relevant coursework and experience or additional education; plus
- At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 federal grade level, including conducting field experiments, data collection and analysis, database development, geospatial analysis, report writing, and organizing field expeditions; or
- Completion of two years of graduate coursework or possession of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree in a directly relevant field.
Volunteer experience applicable to professional competencies will be credited. Submission of transcripts with detailed educational information is required, especially if used in lieu of experience for qualification. Foreign educational credentials require an equivalency evaluation by an authorized organization.
Additional Information and Working Conditions
This role is limited to applicants residing within a 50-mile radius of the Pacific Reefs National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Honolulu, HI, with proof of residency. The position may involve strenuous physical activities in fieldwork, requiring travel via boats, aircraft, and all-terrain vehicles, as well as extended stays in remote field camps. Exposure to wildlife and hazardous substances is possible, necessitating compliance with health and safety policies, including use of protective gear and possibly carrying firearms for personal safety.
Work environment includes office settings and outdoor field locations with variable weather conditions. Telework options are possible with supervisory approval. Employees are expected to uphold governmental ethics and the rule of law and participate in a comprehensive federal benefits program depending on employment status.
