Position Overview

The role of Biological Scientist I involves conducting diverse biological experiments both in field conditions and controlled environments such as greenhouses and laboratories. The candidate will be responsible for operating laboratory equipment to analyze DNA and RNA samples, managing controlled citrus breeding procedures including emasculation, pollination, and bagging, as well as tracking plant parentage and seed batches.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect and process plant tissues, extract DNA and RNA of high quality, and synthesize complementary DNA (cDNA) when necessary.
  • Carry out PCR and quantitative PCR assays alongside gel electrophoresis, maintaining contamination-free processes.
  • Support activities like phenotyping, seedling propagation, tagging, labeling, and use of barcode systems for sample management.
  • Accurately input and verify genotype and phenotype data using laboratory-standard templates and spreadsheets.
  • Maintain detailed inventories of samples, backup data to laboratory drives, and notify supervisors about ongoing data management.
  • Analyze collected data and generate preliminary tables and graphs for reporting.
  • Prepare bi-weekly progress reports summarizing completed work.
  • Ensure strict adherence to research protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), biosafety, and chemical/pesticide handling standards.
  • Calibrate instruments, implement control assays, maintain sample chain-of-custody, and assist in laboratory supply procurement.
  • Carry out routine laboratory maintenance and cleaning, maintain equipment logs, and prepare reagents and buffers with proper labeling and storage according to protocols.

Education and Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related life science discipline is required.
  • Experience with Citrus breeding, genetics, propagation, and field experiment techniques is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision is desirable.

Additional Information

  • This position is time-limited and eligible for veteran’s preference, requiring submission of DD 214 Member Copy 4 if applicable.
  • Applicants must upload a resume to be considered.
