School of Science Overview

The School of Science at AUT includes disciplines such as environmental and marine science, biological science, biomedical science, medical diagnostics, psychology, neuroscience, chemistry, and food science. As part of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, the School emphasizes skilled, culturally aware graduates ready for evolving scientific fields through hands-on, relevant learning and world-class research.

Role Overview

This position offers strategic and operational leadership for AUT's biological sciences laboratories and physical containment facilities. The role ensures safe, compliant, and efficient laboratory environments that support exceptional teaching and research. It involves fostering continuous improvement, capability building, and effective laboratory management.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of biological sciences labs and physical containment settings ensuring compliance and high standards.
• Lead and develop a team of technical professionals via supervision, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
• Maintain health and safety adherence including MPI, HSNO, and other regulatory standards, managing certifications and audits.
• Collaborate with academic staff to facilitate laboratory teaching activities, enhancing student learning experiences.
• Manage laboratory assets, equipment, and resources to guarantee maintenance, suitability, and effective usage.
• Promote ongoing enhancements in lab processes, operational systems, and service quality.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum five years’ experience managing laboratory operations within biological sciences or equivalent regulated environments.
• Proven expertise managing PC2 or comparable containment facilities.
• Background in leading and mentoring technical teams.
• Comprehensive knowledge of health, safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance in laboratories.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with academic personnel, students, regulators, and external partners.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Adopts a leadership style focused on collaboration and continuous advancement.
• Dedicated to equity, diversity, inclusion, and supportive of AUT’s Te Aronui framework.

Employment Details

• Permanent full-time role based at AUT's City Campus (37.5 hours/week).
• Salary range between NZD 90,000 and 106,000 annually.
• Start date as soon as possible.
