About Ford Performance
Ford Racing traces its roots to 1901 when Henry Ford personally built and raced his car, setting the stage for the company's passion for competition and innovation. Today, Ford Performance embodies this legacy through a dedicated team combining engineering excellence and competitive spirit across racetracks and proving grounds worldwide.
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly driven Vehicle Dynamics Engineer specializing in Wheel Force Transducer (WFT) testing and tire characterization to support our NASCAR program. This role is vital in connecting physical track data with laboratory results and simulations. Responsibilities include full execution of WFT test events: logistics, on-track data gathering, complex data analysis, and supporting tire modeling and simulation efforts. The position demands technical skills, software programming expertise, and performing efficiently in a high-pressure racing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct 12-14 advanced WFT and tire testing events annually at leading racing circuits in North America.
- Lead calibration activities prior to events to ensure data accuracy.
- Set up and maintain trackside networks for real-time data capturing and dissemination.
- Detect and troubleshoot sensor or data issues promptly during live testing sessions.
- Represent Ford Racing during tire supplier laboratory testing sessions.
- Develop and refine proprietary software, scripts, and processes to enhance testing efficiency and data processing.
- Manage and extend Ford’s tire database and visualization tools.
- Post-process extensive track data, manage storage systems, and distribute precise telemetry to interdisciplinary partners.
- Run offline simulations and correlate results with track data.
- Assist Driver-in-the-Loop simulator sessions focused on WFT vehicles.
- Collaborate closely with the tire modeling team to advance model development and parameter calibration.
- Investigate and incorporate innovative testing methodologies, sensor technologies, and data analytics techniques.
- Work with partner racing teams to coordinate unified test plans benefiting vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, and competitive strategies.
- Oversee data acquisition hardware lifecycle, including maintenance logs, vendor coordination for quotes and repairs.
- Maintain the WFT testing SharePoint site to ensure efficient knowledge sharing across teams.
Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Between 1 and 3 years of practical experience in vehicle dynamics or related testing areas.
- Solid understanding of vehicle dynamics concepts and physical testing procedures.
- Strong programming skills for data analytics and software development using MATLAB, Simulink, and Python; proficiency in Visual Studio and C# is highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills with ability to thrive under fast-paced conditions.
- Passion for motorsports and dedication to engineering quality.
- Availability and willingness to travel extensively across North America, occasionally internationally, including weekends to participate in test events.
Preferred Attributes
- Previous experience in race engineering or track support within top motorsport series such as NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, WEC, or Formula 1.
- Familiarity with advanced simulation platforms like Dymola, CarSim, VI-Grade, or Canopy.
- Experience using leading data acquisition software such as Motec i2, Bosch WinDarab, or McLaren Atlas.
