Role overview

Sturgeon Public School Division is looking for a forward-thinking and team-oriented leader to oversee Transportation Services. Reporting to the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services, this position leads the planning, administration, and ongoing improvement of the Division’s student transportation program.

The role is focused on delivering transportation that is safe, dependable, efficient, and fair for students, while staying aligned with all relevant laws, Division policies, and industry requirements. It also includes oversight of operations, contractor management, budget control, route planning, risk handling, and engagement with key stakeholders to support student success.

Strategic leadership and operations

  • Direct the planning, rollout, and continuous refinement of student transportation across the Division.
  • Create and recommend policies, procedures, and operating practices that reflect Division priorities and legal obligations.
  • Guide long-range transportation planning and operational reviews to improve effectiveness, efficiency, and safety.
  • Collect, assess, and interpret transportation information to support data-based decisions.

Transportation planning and service delivery

  • Build, manage, assess, and improve routes and schedules to ensure student travel is safe and efficient.
  • Coordinate services for eligible students, including specialized transportation and parent-provided transportation agreements.
  • Work with school leaders to respond to transportation needs and strengthen service delivery.
  • Contribute to emergency planning and operational responses connected to transportation services.

Financial management and contract administration

  • Prepare, track, and manage the yearly transportation budget with the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services.
  • Lead procurement activities, including requests for proposals and transportation service contracts.
  • Negotiate, oversee, and monitor transportation agreements to maintain quality, accountability, and value.
  • Develop transportation grant applications and other required operational and financial reports.

Safety, compliance, and risk management

  • Make sure operations comply with the Education Act, Traffic Safety Act, Student Transportation Regulation, Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulations, insurance rules, and all other applicable provincial and federal laws.
  • Review transportation incidents and complaints and ensure proper follow-up and reporting.
  • Foster a strong safety culture through proactive risk management, training, and continuous improvement.
  • Track contractor adherence to safety standards, contract requirements, and Division expectations.

Leadership and stakeholder relations

  • Lead, coach, and support transportation staff while building a positive, cooperative, service-focused team environment.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with contractors, school administrators, families, municipalities, and community partners.
  • Advise senior leadership on transportation operations, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Handle concerns from parents, schools, and community members with professionalism and good judgment.
  • Strengthen public confidence in student transportation through clear communication and relationship-building.

Technology and innovation

  • Manage routing software, operational systems, and reporting tools used by the transportation team.
  • Look for ways to improve service and efficiency through technology and process changes.
  • Stay up to date on new transportation practices, legislation, and industry trends.

Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation Management, Public Administration, Finance, or a related discipline; equivalent education and experience combinations may also be considered.
  • Progressive leadership experience in transportation, logistics, operations, public administration, or a similar field.
  • Background in student transportation and/or the public education sector is considered an advantage.
