Staff Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer

About the Role

OnStar is a key component of General Motors’ connected services, offering safety, security, diagnostics, navigation, and convenience through mobile apps, web, and vehicle interfaces. These are supported by complex cloud-based systems operating at a global scale. To enhance service reliability, our Dublin SRE team is expanding, focused on ensuring OnStar services are resilient, efficient, and scalable for millions of users worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and deployment of scalable, fault-tolerant, and observable systems supporting OnStar's mobile, web, in-vehicle services, and backend platforms.
• Advocate for best practices in configuration management, infrastructure redesign, and automated testing to enhance system robustness.
• Collaborate with SRE, development, and product teams to boost service reliability, deployment safety, and incident handling procedures.
• Provide strategic advice and planning on reliability standards for new features, customer releases, and platform developments.
• Develop and refine observability frameworks leveraging tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog, including automated alerts and SLO dashboards.
• Oversee on-call rotations, guide blameless postmortems, and perform root cause analyses to prevent repeated outages.
• Mentor team members and cultivate a culture of accountability and operational excellence.
• Support compliance and privacy-focused engineering efforts relating to connected services, including areas such as data retention and safety certification tools.

Qualifications

• Over 8 years of experience in SRE, DevOps, or systems engineering roles, with leadership or mentorship in impactful teams.
• Proven expertise building and managing large-scale, cloud-native infrastructures (AWS, GCP, or Azure preferred).
• Strong skills in container orchestration and deployment strategies including Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, or Java, with commitment to maintainable and high-quality code through reviews.
• Experience leading complex infrastructure projects, configuration strategy, or organization-wide tooling efforts.
• Ability to perform effectively under pressure, troubleshooting live incidents and balancing uptime versus cost.
• Familiarity with privacy engineering, data security, and compliance frameworks is a plus.
• Excellent communication skills to effectively influence, mentor, and lead multidisciplinary technical teams.

Additional Details

This role follows a hybrid working model, requiring attendance at the Dublin office at least three times per week or as business needs dictate.
