Role Overview
As a Spacecraft Electronics Engineer, your core responsibility will be the design and integration of customized components for cutting-edge satellite platforms. This encompasses the creation of Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs), selecting and integrating off-the-shelf parts as well as bespoke sensors, radios, and power modules. Your duties also include making on-the-spot corrections, collaborating with external fabricators and assembly teams, and coordinating closely with software and mechanical divisions. You may contribute throughout various development phases, ranging from early proofs of concept to the introduction of new products.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop spacecraft electronics by gathering requirements, outlining architecture, and performing detailed designs.
- Select components and design circuits, including running simulations as needed.
- Perform schematic capture and PCB layout tasks using Altium Designer.
- Design circuits for power supplies and power monitoring.
- Verify designs through circuit simulations, including considering worst-case scenarios.
- Analyze signal and power integrity through simulations.
- Conduct peer reviews of schematics and PCB layouts.
- Lead board bring-up procedures alongside validation and debugging efforts.
- Support validation and qualification testing for new and existing hardware systems.
Essential Skills and Experience
- A solid foundation in electronics theory, covering component knowledge and both analog and digital circuitry.
- Expertise in board design including schematic capture and PCB layout with commercial tools (preferably Altium), emphasizing design for manufacturing principles.
- Hands-on experience with FPGA platforms like Zynq MPSoC or RFSoC, especially for high-speed, high-data-rate digital signal processing.
- Strong understanding of high-speed digital layout practices including matched impedance, PCB stack-up, and manufacturing constraints, along with signal integrity tools.
- Proficient with digital communication interfaces such as I2C, SPI, CAN, UART, USB, RS485, RS422, SpaceWire, PCIe, and Gigabit Ethernet.
- Experience designing rigid, flexible, and rigid-flex PCBs.
- Capability in debugging and fault diagnosis.
- Competence in using laboratory instruments including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and vector network analyzers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with IPC-6012DS Class 3A or ECSS-Q-ST-70-12C/60C design compliance.
- Knowledge of high-power electronic design and thermal management techniques.
- Experience with signal integrity simulation tools such as HyperLynx or similar.
- Understanding of environmental and reliability requirements for space applications.
- Experience in FPGA programming with Verilog or VHDL.
- Background in embedded and digital signal processing programming (C/C++, microcontrollers, DSPs).
- Skills related to EMI/EMC design, including the use of shielding and enclosures.
- Experience with radio frequency electronics design.
